Darby Pop Publishing has had numerous up-and-coming writers and artists collaborating with us over the years. Each month, we’ll be highlighting the most recent work by one of these industry professionals who passed through our doors on the way to making their sequential storytelling dreams come true.

Artist Michael Montenant is a true Darby Pop veteran. After working on titles like Bruce Lee: The Dragon Rises, Dead Squad, and City: Mind In The Machine, it’s pretty easy to see why we consider him “family.” But did you know that Michael has also worked with companies run by comic legends like Brian K Vaughn, and famed musicians like The Zac Brown Band? Don’t worry — we’re gonna tell you all about it in this latest installment of “What Are They Up To Now”?

Michael’s work has spanned a wide variety of genres and media. For starters, he worked for Legendary on the graphic novel tied to their film, Krampus,. He also served in various roles on Dominion: The Last Sacrifice for Jet City Comics. All of which then led to the creation of Glacier City, a series on which Montenant was partnered with writer Jay Faerber, and was ultimately featured on Brian K Vaughn’s digital platform, Panel Syndicate. Telling the story of Wes Cutter, a police chief in a remote Alaskan town, Glacier City is a gritty noir that’s perfect for fans of books like Criminal.

Surprisingly, many of Montenant’s current or most recent gigs haven’t even been a part of the comic industry. Montenant’s art can be seen on Harry Potter and Jurassic Park-themed projects at Universal Studios Japan, and Michael was picked to be the artist for the Zac Brown Band’s adult coloring book.

This exposure helped lead to his latest work, (Un)Holy War, which was part of the Genocide Exhibit at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum in September of 2019. Of course, Michael hasn’t exactly turned his back on floppies; he’s currently busy working for Ahoy Comics on a project that he can’t reveal the details of — just yet.

Montenant looks back at his time at Darby Pop fondly, explaining that he “learned a lot” from the many titles he lent his talents to. Working from another artist’s rough layouts, as he sometimes did, “really “helped to improve the way I lay out pages now. It also helped me try and vary my characters more,” Michael explained.

Whatever he’s working on and in whatever form, Michael Montenant’s output is consistently excellent, and uniquely his own.
